If we travel along the Asturian coast, traveling along the A-8, we must not avoid taking one of the two deviations to the AS-257 that will take us to the fishing village of Lastres. Officially known as Llastres, it is a charming fishing village located in the municipality of Colunga, on the eastern coast of Asturias, Spain. This town is famous for its picturesque architecture, steep and narrow streets that descend towards the sea. But you will undoubtedly fall in love with its views and its gastronomy and, best of all, its people.
The villa can be visited in one day, but the place will undoubtedly invite you to stay. You won't go wrong if you decide to do it.
BRIEF HISTORY OF BALLASTS
The town originally known as Santa María de Sábada, whose name comes from Latin, had a port in Roman times used for the mineral trade, taking advantage of the favorable conditions of its bay. Since the 10th century, there is a mention of Sátava in documents related to Alfonso III. It is possible that the name Lastres derives from geological characteristics of the area.
The expansion of Lastres is mainly attributed to its fishing industry. Starting in the 16th century, whaling is documented, a common practice in the ports of the Cantabrian Sea. During the Modern Age, the capture of sardines, sea bream, bonito, among others, is recorded, accompanied by the production of pickled fish and commercial exchange with various Atlantic ports. The instability of its dock led Charles III to order its reconstruction, although these efforts were never successful. In 1821, the inhabitants of Lastres requested before the Cortes the repair of their port, affected by the waves, without success. Years later, the desired expansion was carried out, although in a modest way, limiting the growth of the town. Furthermore, over the centuries it was necessary to build fortifications in the town due to conflicts such as the War of Succession. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Lastres established itself as a modest fishing port on the coast of Asturias, beginning to diversify its economy towards tourism and gastronomy in the second half of the 20th century. In 2010, it was awarded as an Exemplary Town at the Prince of Asturias Awards.
